The Foresight Training resource pack aims to help pre- and post-registration nurses and midwives develop and practise the skills needed to identify situations when a patient safety incident is more likely to occur.
Foresight is the ability to identify, respond to and recover from the initial indications that a patient safety incident could take place.
Foresight Training consists of scenarios relevant to staff in primary care, acute care and mental healthcare settings. The scenarios are both paper- and video-based, and supported by materials for a training facilitator.
Each scenario contains a set of detailed ‘foresight factors’ to encourage participants to be more alert to recognising them, before a patient safety incident occurs in future.
The underlying principles can be applied in many settings and the training can be adapted for use by other healthcare professionals.
It has been developed to:
- Improve awareness of the factors increasing the likelihood of patient safety incidents.
- Increase empowerment among staff to intervene to prevent them.
- Increase local learning from sharing experiences.
Improve understanding of ‘risk-prone’ and ‘near miss’ situations, and what should be reported.
- Help nurses and midwives to adopt a more proactive approach to managing complex, dynamic healthcare systems.
