The National Reporting and Learning Service (NRLS) is committed to helping safeguarding patient safety within the NHS.


To help NHS organisations and health professionals achieve this goal, the NRLS guidance documents which advise on best practice in healthcare.


Examples include:

  • Seven Steps to Patient Safety: a series of publications setting out the steps that local organisations can take to improve patient safety

  • Design for Patient Safety: a series exploring how better design can improve patient safety

  • Dysphagia: guidance to support staff caring for adults with learning disabilities who have dysphagia


The NRLS also produces a comprehensive range of alerts, reports and toolkits which support the guidance.
