The National Reporting and Learning Service (NRLS) uses data on patient safety incidents to help NHS organisations and staff to improve patient safety.
The NRLS issues regular reports which analyse the data from patient safety incident reports submitted to the National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) by healthcare staff.
Examples include:
-
Organisation Patient Safety Incident Reports, which contain a high-level breakdown of incident reports submitted by individual organisations in England and Wales.
-
NRLS Quarterly Data Workbooks containing summary data for a 12 month period. These single work books replace the Quarterly Data Summaries.
-
Quarterly Data Summaries (superceded by NRLS Quarterly Data Workbooks), which set out the number of patient safety incident reports received and describe patterns and trends.
-
Patient Safety Observatory reports, which draw on RLS data along with a range of intelligence sources to identify trends in patient safety incidents. They also highlight and recommend areas for action.
Information from patient safety incidents is also used by the NRLS to develop guidance, tools and campaigns to encourage NHS organisations and staff to learn from incidents and ensure they do not happen again.
