Support staff (communications and administration)

The National Reporting and Learning Service (NRLS) issues advice to the NHS in England and Wales on a variety of topics. Some of these relate to procedures that impact on support staff, for example:

• Safer Practice Notice: Right patient, right blood – a series of actions for staff to ensure that blood transfusions are carried out safely, including competencies for all staff involved in blood transfusions

• Patient identification – guidance on improving systems to ensure patients are correctly identified. This includes a Safer Practice Notice on using the NHS number as the national identifier for all patients and standardising the design of patient wristbands, the information on them and the processes used to produce and check them.
