Prisons and other custodial settings

Healthcare professionals working in the field of prison health face massive challenges. About 10 percent of the total prison population consult the healthcare team every day. There are around 130,000 new receptions into prison per annum. Approximately 90 percent of offenders have a diagnosable mental health problem, and 10 percent have a severe and enduring mental illness. A local prison transfers an average of 100 inmates per month to other prisons.

To help improve the safety of healthcare provided to patients in prison, the National Patient Safety Agency develops guidance and safety improvement tools for NHS organisations and staff delivering healthcare in prison or other custodial settings.
