General practice

General practice is the largest specialty in the NHS. Each year, in England alone, there are approximately 300 million consultations.


Every day, doctors, nurses, practice managers, healthcare assistants and reception staff provide high quality care to their local communities.


However, studies have identified that medical error occurs between five and 80 times per 100,000 consultations, mainly related to diagnosis and treatment.


The National Reporting and Learning Service (NRLS) is working with healthcare organisations and royal colleges to improve reporting of patient safety incidents from general practice so that national learning can be developed.
