Women's health

Obstetrics and gynaecology comprises the care of pregnant women, unborn children and the management of diseases specific to women. In many areas, the specialties of gynaecology and obstetrics overlap, but gynaecology is concerned with the female genital tract and its disorders.

Care is provided in a variety of settings including primary care. Much gynaecological surgery takes place in day surgery units.

Most consultants are generalists but there is increasing sub-specialisation. Sub-specialties include materno-fetal medicine, gynaecologic oncology, gynaecological urology, reproductive medicine and community gynaecology.
