Since 2006, NHS dentistry has undergone significant reform with changes to the way in which dental services are commissioned.


Primary care trusts (PCTs) are now responsible for local NHS dental services. Local Dental Committees and dental advisors operate within each PCT.


Dentists may provide care to both NHS and private patients. Compared to general practitioners they have a higher proportion of private practice.
